Casablanca Cracks Down on Illegal Ads and Ride-Hailing Services

The city of Casablanca is launching a crusade against advertising billboards for unauthorized businesses and services. In its sights are transport services via applications, commonly called "car transport with driver" (VTC) which have no legal status in Morocco, and products "harmful" to health.
Casablanca also prohibits advertisements deemed too explicit, not respecting public order, good morals and ethics, or national values. To put an end to these advertising posters, the municipal council should approve specifications relating to the temporary occupation of public domain for commercial advertising purposes. The beneficiaries of public display authorizations are required to provide effective anti-piracy programs to avoid the dissemination of messages contrary to law or public order.
Moreover, the specifications include a section prohibiting advertising for products harmful to health such as tobacco or alcoholic beverages, or advertising for fictitious or unauthorized companies, such as transport platforms by applications, or pyramid scheme or network management companies. These new provisions will be discussed at the next meeting of the municipal council.
Last year, the municipal council had already approved a document that had been the subject of remarks from the General Directorate of National Security, which had sent a letter to its services. In this correspondence, it had explained missing terms regarding respect for public order, and requested that a section requiring holders of display authorizations to contract computerized protection systems be added.
