Casablanca Building Collapse Prompts Criminal Investigation, Officials Face Scrutiny

The public prosecutor at the criminal court of first instance of Ain Sebaa ordered the opening of an investigation following the collapse of the building located in the Bourgogne district of Casablanca.
Upon arrival at the scene of the collapse, the judicial police services collected clues and information to help them conduct the investigation. They also established the list of people who will be called to testify, reports the daily Assabah. The people who will be questioned are also on a list. These include officials, the two owners of a premises located under the building, construction contractors and officials within the prefecture of Casablanca-Anfa. Arrests are not excluded.

On Thursday at 2:35 p.m., the building located in the Bourgogne district of Casablanca collapsed. Fortunately, no victims are to be deplored. Alerted, all the authorities went to the scene, led by the wali Mohamed Mhidia, in addition to the officials of the prefecture, the municipality and the district as well as the police and civil protection to proceed with the immediate evacuation of the building in 35 minutes.
What is the cause of the collapse? Two hypotheses emerge. Renovation work on a cafe-restaurant located on the ground floor of the building, carried out without authorization from the district services and without the support of interior design plans, are to blame. These works would have affected the structures and foundations of the building. The worrying cracks are evidence of this.
The second hypothesis: the land on which the building is built is saturated with water and the water table is close to the surface.
