Casablanca Authorities Launch Surprise Inspections of Cafes and Restaurants

The authorities in Casablanca are carrying out a large-scale operation to ensure that cafes and restaurants comply with the obligation to have a "cash register". A measure aimed at combating food poisoning.

Accompanied by officials from the Department of Economics at the Hay Mohammadi - Ain Sebaa prefecture, the local authorities carried out a surprise raid on dozens of cafes and restaurants, particularly those offering fast food, to verify the use of the "cash register" in these establishments. This initiative aims to "impose the invoicing system on those operating informally," sources tell Al3omk.

"The authorities in charge of this campaign have issued several fines against those who do not have a ’cash register’, in accordance with the provisions of Article 4 of the Dahir implementing Law No. 31.08 on the determination of consumer protection measures, updated in its new version dated November 21, 2020," the same sources add.

This text obliges establishments to "issue an invoice, a receipt, a cash register ticket or any other equivalent document to any consumer who has made a purchase, in accordance with the applicable tax provisions," it is pointed out, specifying that this campaign is part of the efforts made by the Ministry of the Interior to combat cases of food poisoning in the city of Casablanca.

"The Casablanca authorities insist on the application of this cash register and its generalization to all cafes and restaurants in the Hay Mohammadi - Ain Sebaa area, knowing that many fines exceeding a value of 1,500 dirhams have already been issued," said the president of the Moroccan Association of Cafe and Restaurant Owners of the Casablanca-Settat region, adding that "the establishment of the ’cash register’ will make the invoice a legal proof in case of food poisoning."
