Carrefour Store in Spanish Enclave Ceuta Accepts Moroccan Dirhams

The French Carrefour store in Ceuta has started to allow the payment of its products in Moroccan dirhams. A first in the country to try to attract Moroccan customers.
The information is reported by El Debate which specifies that, by this measure, the French distribution giant facilitates the life of its Moroccan customers who will no longer have to exchange the dirham for the euro before stocking up in its Ceuta center. Moroccan customers will, of course, receive their balances in euros.
This decision by Carrefour benefits Morocco, which has been trying for years to annex the Spanish autonomous city to its territory, analyzes the Spanish media, estimating that it will in particular relieve the Moroccan border populations with Ceuta.
However, the measure could prove ineffective, according to the businessmen of the Spanish enclave who recall that Morocco, in violation of the principle of reciprocity in trade with Spain, does not allow the entry of products purchased in Ceuta onto its territory. A situation that affects the economy of the autonomous city, it is deplored.
Morocco and Spain agreed in April 2022 to open a commercial customs office in Ceuta and reopen the one in Melilla, unilaterally closed by Morocco since August 2018, in order to normalize the flow of goods between the two countries. But these measures are slow to materialize.
