Canary Islands Urge Spain to Challenge Morocco’s Maritime Claims

The regional government of the Canary Islands is demanding more "firmness" from the Spanish central government towards Morocco. This request follows the publication in the Official Gazette of two laws adopted by the Moroccan parliament on the delimitation of maritime space.
The Canarian president, Angel Torres, spoke on the phone with Arancha Gonzalez Laya, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is calling on the Spanish government for a stronger reaction in defending the rights of the Canary Islands. But for the central government, the publication of these two laws in the Official Gazette of Morocco "does not change the situation".
"There will be no unilateral decision by Morocco on the delimitation of its territorial waters, much less if this decision affects the maritime space of the Canary Islands," Torres reiterated during this telephone conversation.
