Canary Islands Air Force Chief: Morocco Tensions ’Political’, Not a Security Threat

The Canary Islands Air Force considers the tension between Spain and Morocco as "political" and "does not see it as a threat", said Fernando Torres San José, the Chief of Staff of the Canary Islands Air Command (MACAN).
"It is rather a political problem. We are prepared for any threat that could arise, but for now we do not think this conflict is a threat. We have common partners. We are in NATO and we must not forget that the United States is a partner of Morocco and also of ours," San José said at a press conference on the Canary Islands’ air space security mission. According to him, the tension between the two countries has not yet reached and could not reach a level that would affect security in the region, reports La Provincia.
During the press conference, San José recalled that the Canary Islands air forces carry out effective actions of rescue of migrants, transport of vaccines and medical equipment, extinguishing of bush fires, etc. These actions are little known, he acknowledges, before emphasizing the need to invest more to strengthen and modernize the capabilities of the air force in order to effectively face threats.
The Canary Islands Air Force is facing several security challenges due to its proximity to Africa. It is therefore called upon in the fight against terrorism and illegal immigration, concluded San José.
