In August 2026, Canada exported 421,000 tonnes of durum wheat, up 210% from a year earlier. Two destinations stood out: Morocco and Italy, which received the largest shares.

These figures appear in new forecasts from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, detailed on October 21 by DePutter Publishing. The 210% increase applies to all Canadian exports in August, across all destinations.

The official Canadian report for September reported an 18% decrease in volumes shipped to the Kingdom during the 2025-2026 season, which ended on July 31. Better harvests in North Africa had reduced the region’s import needs. At the same time, Canada recorded a global export record of 5.85 million tonnes.

Morocco among the major durum wheat markets

Despite the decline, Canadian sales to Morocco had already reached about 900,000 tonnes between August 2025 and June 2026, according to the figures published by Ottawa in August. The Kingdom ranked third, behind Algeria and Italy.

Durum wheat is used to make semolina, pasta and couscous. The trade therefore provides an important raw material for Moroccan processors.

The new season, which began on August 1, is off to a strong start: 787,000 tonnes passed through Canada’s licensed export channels by the end of September, compared with 359,000 a year earlier. Ottawa has just raised its annual export forecast by 250,000 tonnes, to 5.3 million tonnes.

Canada also forecasts a durum wheat harvest of 6.415 million tonnes and end-of-season stocks of 1.35 million tonnes. Its expected average producer price for 2026-2027 is 290 Canadian dollars per tonne.
