Bangladesh orders 210,000 tonnes of Moroccan fertilizer in less than two weeks

The pace is picking up for OCP in Bangladesh. On August 24, the Bangladesh Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) authorized four new lots of phosphate fertilizer from Morocco, according to data published by Bangladesh’s national agency BSS.

They consist of two 40,000-tonne lots of diammonium phosphate (DAP), totaling 80,000 tonnes, priced at 894 dollars per tonne. Two other lots each cover 30,000 tonnes of triple superphosphate (TSP), at prices of 678 and 668 dollars per tonne, respectively. In total, this single decision therefore represents 140,000 tonnes of Moroccan fertilizer, worth approximately 111.9 million dollars.

But this order comes only twelve days after a first major decision. On August 12, the same committee had already given the green light to the purchase from OCP Nutricrops of 40,000 tonnes of DAP at 891.67 dollars per tonne and 30,000 tonnes of TSP at 677.33 dollars per tonne. These 70,000 tonnes represented nearly 56 million dollars, according to another BSS publication.

210,000 tonnes approved in twelve days

By adding the decisions of August 12 and 24, Bangladesh has thus approved the purchase of 210,000 tonnes of Moroccan phosphate fertilizer in less than two weeks: 120,000 tonnes of DAP and 90,000 tonnes of TSP. The theoretical value of the six lots reaches nearly 167.9 million dollars based on the approved prices.

These purchases are carried out under the government-to-government agreement between OCP Nutricrops and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). They illustrate the growing role of Moroccan fertilizer in Dhaka’s supply strategy, as the authorities seek to secure the stocks needed by farmers.

Bangladesh does not purchase exclusively from Morocco, however. At its August 24 meeting, the CCGP approved a total of 365,000 tonnes of fertilizer also sourced from Saudi Arabia, Russia, Canada and a Bangladeshi producer. Of these volumes, the 140,000 tonnes allocated to OCP nevertheless represent more than one-third of the purchases authorized that day.

For OCP, this new series of orders comes as the Moroccan group strengthens its presence in several major markets. Moroccan phosphate fertilizer has notably regained access to the U.S. market, while the group continues to increase its production capacity in Morocco.

Bangladesh, for its part, is a long-standing customer. As early as 2023, Dhaka had already approved new deliveries of Moroccan fertilizer as part of its cooperation with OCP. The decisions made in August 2026 now show a change in scale: 210,000 tonnes approved in just twelve days.
