CAF Imposes Severe Penalty on Mauritius for Futsal AFCON Withdrawal

The 2020 edition of the continental indoor football competition also called Futsal is being held from January 28 to February 7 in Laâyoune, Morocco. For having chosen to withdraw from this tournament, Mauritius has just been heavily sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Mauritius’ choice was motivated by "international political" reasons. In so doing, the Mauritian government would be aligning itself with South Africa’s boycott policy.
Mauritius’ attitude came after the notification made on January 28 by the Ministry of Sports to the Mauritius Football Association (MFA), stating that the tournament would take place in the city of Laâyoune in southern Morocco.
Faced with this behavior, the reaction of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) did not wait. The football management body has imposed on Mauritius a fine of $75,000 as well as a two-AFCON suspension.
