CAF Champions League Final Controversy: Wydad Abandons Match, Espérance de Tunis Awarded Victory

This is a match that will make history in Africa. The Moroccan club Wydad refused yesterday to take the field after a disputed goal, which prompted the referee to end the match and declare the Espérance de Tunis team the winner.
The outcome of this match must be the subject of a meeting this Monday, June 4, a meeting that has just been urgently convened by the President of CAF Ahmad Ahmad. "Following the events that occurred during the EST/WAC match counting for the 2018/2019 Total CAF Champions League final return leg and after the interruption of the match, the President of CAF Mr. Ahmad AHMAD decides to convene an emergency Executive Committee on June 4 to discuss the regulatory outcomes to be reserved for this match," reads a statement released last night.
The Tunisians were leading the score until the 60th minute when the Moroccan players suspended the match after the referee decided to cancel the Wydadis’ goal for a controversial offside. Gambian referee Bakary Gassama suspended the match for more than an hour before signaling the final end of the match.
EST therefore emerges victorious from this cup and wins the title of double African champion after the one won last November.
It should be noted that a bus transporting Moroccan supporters had been targeted by stone throwing from Tunisians yesterday, a few hours before the start of the match between the two teams.
