British Tourists Surge in Marrakech, Challenging France’s Top Spot

The Marrakech destination has always been popular, and France remains its leading European market. But the ochre city is increasingly attracting the British, who could dethrone the French.
According to the tourism delegation’s dashboard, the city’s classified establishments received some 1,766,786 tourists at the end of July, generating 5.3 million overnight stays, of which 4,329,361 were by foreign tourism. International tourism accounted for 78% of overnight stays, and domestic tourism 22%. In Marrakech, France is the leading European market with 27%. During the first seven months of 2024, the number of arrivals from France was around 399,338, an increase of +13% compared to the same period in 2023.
This market generated 1,522,157 overnight stays, an increase of 16%, according to the Marrakech/Safi Regional Tourism Council. This French enthusiasm is explained by a plethoric air offer. As an illustration, the air connection between France and Marrakech grew by +18% in July 2024, from 665 flights per week (July 2023) to 785 flights per week, according to L’Économiste.
The domestic market is the second dominant market with 22%, generating 1.2 million overnight stays in 7 months. However, this figure is down 5% compared to the same period last year. With 209,000 arrivals in classified accommodations and 892,662 overnight stays, the British market is in third place. The Netherlands also represents an important market, with 125,586 overnight stays, an increase of 42%. The American market, on the other hand, has been in free fall since last October.
