British Mother’s Dream Vacation Turns into Medical Nightmare in Marrakech

Rebecca Russell, a 32-year-old British woman, fell seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital while enjoying her vacation in Marrakech with her partner Sam Bindley, also 32, and two close friends.
This mother of four children, originally from Ellesmere Port in Merseyside, arrived in Marrakech on Sunday, June 22nd, with her husband and close friends to enjoy a dream vacation. But three days later, Rebecca started vomiting and feeling unwell. Concerned about her deteriorating health, her fiancé Sam decided to call for help. The young woman was rushed to the intensive care unit of the hospital in the ochre city, where she remained in critical condition for more than a week.
"It started as a simple stomach bug, they thought that since they were in an all-inclusive hotel, it was just a small virus they caught there. But her condition became worrying. She was not at all in her normal state, she didn’t understand what was happening. Sam ended up calling a doctor who prescribed her anti-vomiting pills, but after two and a half days, he called an ambulance that took her to the hospital in Marrakech," explains her friend Molly Beetson, 31, to the Liverpool Echo.
After tests, the doctors discovered that the British woman was suffering from kidney and liver failure, as well as sepsis. "She was really ill... It will take her time to realize what she went through and to overcome this trauma. It all started with a stomach bug and got worse. She is a type 1 diabetic, so we think it got worse because of her inability to eat for several days," adds Molly.
Rebecca "may be able to return to the UK in the next few days, but the insurance company has said it will only cover part of the hospital costs. And she may need a medical flight to return to the UK, which is extremely expensive," continues Molly, who states that her friend and her fiancé only want one thing: "to go home and be with their children and family."
