British Hikers Found Safe in Morocco Earthquake Zone After Days Missing

Missing after the earthquake that shook Morocco and killed more than 2,400 people, two British tourists were found alive, sleeping safely in the streets of an isolated village.
Some were not so lucky. Rebecca Calvert, 65, and her friend Hilary Mckegney, 64, were less than 30 km from the epicenter of the earthquake on Friday night into Saturday. The two friends had just arrived in Imlil, in the Atlas mountains, for a hike and were supposed to stay at the Le Village Du Toubkal hotel when the earthquake occurred. Panicked and without news, Katie, Rebecca Calvert’s daughter, tweeted to beg Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to send aid to Imlil, where she thought her mother and her friend were missing. "Please urgently send British resources to the region in question (Imlil), and urgently provide information on their location. At least two British nationals have gone to this region. If we arrive quickly on site, we can save them," she requested.
The Foreign Office told Will, 66, Rebecca Calvert’s husband, that his wife had not been affected by the powerful earthquake. According to the ministry, the place where she was located was spared by the earthquake. In a statement to the PA news agency, Will, director of the Windsor and Eton brewery, was delighted that his wife had the incredible luck to be safe, as she was less than 30 km from the villages in the province of Al-Haouz, the epicenter of the earthquake south of the tourist city of Marrakech, in the center of the kingdom. "We finally got news of my wife and her friend (on Sunday). They slept on the streets with the locals for two days," rejoices Katie. Arrived in Marrakech on Sunday, her mother was able to regain the phone signal and spoke by phone with Will.
Will Calvert’s husband added that his wife and Hilary Mckegney were to sleep on the floor of Marrakech airport on Sunday and hoped to fly back to London Gatwick on Monday, but their trip could be delayed due to a crack in the runway of the city’s airport.
