Deadly 6.8 Magnitude Quake Strikes Morocco, Strongest in Century

Morocco was shaken by the "most violent earthquake in a century," said Nasser Jabour, an official at the National Institute of Geophysics.
This disaster has killed more than 600 people according to a provisional toll, striking several major cities like Rabat, Casablanca, Fez and Marrakech. The epicenter was located in the village of Ighil, in the Al Haouz region, and the shock was felt within a 400 km radius.
"This is the first time in a century that the center has recorded such a violent earthquake of this type in Morocco," he said.
Nasser Jabour also stressed that this historic earthquake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, the most powerful of which reached a magnitude of around 6 on the Richter scale. However, these aftershocks are less intense and citizens may not feel them.
According to a statement from the National Institute of Geophysics, the initial earthquake had a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale. This unprecedented earthquake in a century has a depth of about 8 kilometers and its epicenter is precisely at 30.961 degrees north latitude and 8.413 degrees west longitude.
