British Firm Secures New Offshore Gas Exploration License in Morocco

While several players abandoned assets in 2020, Chariot Oil & Gas has improved its positions, mainly in Morocco. It has just acquired a new exploration area called Rissana Offshore, the contract for which will be finalized in 2021.

The negotiation of a new exploration permit off the coast of Morocco by the British company Chariot Oil & Gas has just come to an end. "... With the official allocation of the Rissana license scheduled for 2021, we have shown Chariot’s strong commitment to the Anchois gas project as well as in Morocco," said Adonis Pouroulis, Interim CEO of Chariot. For the moment, the agreement is subject to the usual regulatory procedures and approvals of the Kingdom, reports Panorapost, specifying that when the authorizations are granted, the company will control 75% of the perimeter and the rest will be allocated to ONHYM.

Through this agreement, Chariot undertakes to carry out a 2D seismic data acquisition on part of the perimeter. The analysis will make it possible to assess the extension and the potential of this zone likely to contain natural gas reserves located on the Trend of many other perimeters with high gas potential.

It should be noted that the Mohammedia and Kenitra exploration licenses were abandoned by Chariot and ONHYM, in order to allow the grouping of the prospective areas already covered by 3D seismic data in the Rissana license covering approximately 8,476 km². When this is concluded, Rissana will completely cover the boundaries of Chariot’s current Lixus license containing the Anchois gas discovery and the most promising areas of the northern Mohammedia and Kenitra offshore licenses recently held.
