Brazilian Women Arrested at Casablanca Airport for Smuggling Cocaine

Tuesday 26 February 2019, by Said

Two Brazilian nationals were arrested on Sunday by the police at the Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca for their alleged involvement in a drug case, and more specifically cocaine.

Aged 28 and 42, they were apprehended on board a plane from Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). A search led to the discovery of 2,810 grams of cocaine in their underwear, and the police also suspect that they are carrying the same amount of drugs in their intestines.

The two "mules" were transferred to the Ibn Rochd Hospital in Casablanca to extract the remaining drugs, and an investigation has been opened to try to determine the exact origin of the cocaine, the DGSN said.

Last month, at the same airport, the police arrested a Brazilian in possession of one kilogram of cocaine in his intestines.

For several years, Morocco has become a hub for cocaine trafficking from South America, mainly from Brazil. In most cases, they are African nationals, but sometimes also Moroccans, very often women.

Why Casablanca? Most African countries do not have a direct air link with the countries of South America. These flights are mainly operated by the national airline Royal Air Maroc, which is very present in Africa.
