Flight tickets: Why flights to Morocco will cost more

The Air France-KLM group has already recorded a first price increase. The company justifies this decision by explaining that "the current geopolitical context in the Middle East has led to a significant and sudden increase in fuel prices, particularly kerosene".

A direct consequence of this situation, round-trip tickets issued in economy class from March 11 onwards are subject to a 50-euro surcharge on long-haul flights. Currently, the global average price of kerosene is approaching $168 per barrel.

This volatility weighs heavily on the air transport economy. According to the International Air Transport Association, hydrocarbons are one of the main expenditure items for carriers, accounting for nearly 25.7% of their total operating costs.

This phenomenon is forcing many global players such as SAS, Air India or Qantas to adjust. Cathay Pacific has even doubled its fuel surcharge on certain European routes. To cushion this shock, Air France-KLM has secured 70% of its future needs at a fixed price.

While these hedging strategies limit the immediate impact, the situation remains precarious, exacerbated by the saturation of airspaces due to route deviations. If the tensions persist, the sector will continue to pass on these additional costs, inevitably penalizing future travelers.
