Belgium Warns Drivers That Animals Can Cross Moroccan Motorways

A road in good condition is not enough to guarantee a safe journey. In its Morocco transport advisory, dated July 1, 2025, the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs gives the infrastructure a favorable assessment, while warning drivers that animals, as well as pedestrians, may cross motorways.

The advice is aimed at travelers planning journeys in the Kingdom. It urges them to distinguish the quality of the road network from traffic conditions. A motorway may have a satisfactory road surface and still pose a risk because of an unexpected presence on the roadway.

This danger has already featured in Bladi’s archives. In November 2025, photos taken near the southern entrance to Berrechid showed stray dogs alongside the motorway and toll plaza. For motorists, these areas call for particular attention: vehicles gather there and change speed as they approach the barriers.

Night driving discouraged

The Belgian recommendation also concerns the time of travel. It advises against driving at night on the Casablanca-Rabat, Casablanca-Marrakech and Rabat-Nador routes, as well as on the secondary road network. For visitors planning several stops, choosing a departure time is therefore part of preparing the trip.

Collisions with animals have also led to legal action. In September 2025, Bladi reported on a motorist’s complaint against Autoroutes du Maroc after an accident involving a dog in March 2024. The driver, who was traveling with his two minor children, sought compensation and challenged the road’s safety measures.

For excursions in desert regions, the Belgian advisory recommends carefully planning the route and using official guides. Leaving the main roads also requires a suitable vehicle and appropriate communication equipment.

Motorcycle and quad outings are subject to specific instructions: do not ride off-road alone and maintain regular contact between participants and organizers.
