It is becoming increasingly difficult for Moroccans to buy housing
Housing is a constitutional right, but it is becoming an inaccessible luxury for many Moroccans. Faced with a price surge described as record-breaking and the erosion of purchasing power, MP Loubna Sghiri questioned the Minister of Housing, pointing to the failure of current policies and the urgency of regulating a market left to speculation.
The assessment made by the representative of the Party of Progress and Socialism is alarming. While access to property is a pillar of social stability, the reality of the market is increasingly excluding citizens. The last few months have been marked by a drastic increase in apartment and house prices, creating an insurmountable gap with the incomes of the middle and lower classes. This discrepancy makes the acquisition of decent housing particularly difficult for young households and vulnerable populations, transforming a fundamental right into a source of growing social anxiety.
For the elected official, this situation is the direct consequence of poor management of the sector. She criticizes the lack of a strategic vision capable of balancing supply and demand, leaving the field open to speculators who take advantage of families’ needs. This deregulation is added to the inflation of construction materials and the delays accumulated in the delivery of social and intermediate housing programs, exacerbating a crisis that current public policies are unable to stem.
A call for emergency measures against speculation
Faced with this diagnosis, the parliamentary group is demanding concrete responses from the supervisory ministry. Loubna Sghiri is calling for the activation of urgent provisions to regulate market prices and curb speculative practices that erode household purchasing power.
Beyond price regulation, the MP advocates for a tangible and effective expansion of social housing programs. She insists on the need to accompany these initiatives with rigorous control mechanisms, in order to ensure that these homes truly benefit the greatest number, and primarily the young and the most vulnerable social categories.
