Beauvais: The Ordeal of a Moroccan Woman Alone in a Ghost Building Slated for Demolition

In the Argentina neighborhood in Beauvais, a Moroccan woman and her four children are the last tenants of a building destined for demolition. Amid deteriorating conditions, this situation drags on following her repeated refusals of rehousing offers.

The daily life of the woman we’ll call Rachida resembles a true horror film. For nearly ten months, this single mother has been surviving on the fourth floor of 13 Rue de Provence, a residential building with blown-out doors and marked by fire damage. Her landing has become a playground for thieves and vagrants. "Go ahead, go in, not me, I’m afraid," she confides. Regular looting causes power and internet outages due to copper theft, while damage to the entrance prevents the mail carrier from delivering mail. Beyond the insecurity, the moldy ceiling in one of the bedrooms is even worsening her daughter’s respiratory problems.

Although the building is to be demolished next June as part of an urban renewal plan, the tenant is holding firm to her criteria. She has already rejected at least four offers deemed "too small." Occupying a large 100-square-meter space for over fifteen years, she demands a similar configuration to house her children, aged 19 to 26. Proud of her roots, she invokes the strength of "tradition in Morocco" to justify her choice: it is "out of the question that my daughter live alone without having been married."

For its part, the social housing landlord finds itself in a legal impasse. As reported by Le Courrier Picard, the Oise HLM social housing company is forced to multiply proceedings until an agreement is reached, thus delaying the demolition project. The organization claims to have submitted five suitable proposals since 2023, all rejected. This rehousing crisis is not isolated, with the landlord counting three other families trapped in similar conditions within the same neighborhood.
