Beach Rental Mafias Spark Controversy on Morocco’s Northern Coast

In Tetouan, M’Diq and Al Hoceima, chair and parasol renters dictate their law to the vacationers who have come in large numbers to spend good times on the beaches. The issue is reaching Parliament.
The chair and parasol renters are illegally exploiting the beaches of northern Morocco. Present on the beach areas, they "act violently to intimidate the vacationers who are usually with their families," and "force them to accept their services," reports the Arabic-language daily Al Akhbar. Facts denounced by consumer protection associations in the North.
Recently, the competent authorities dispatched control commissions to the sites. Their mission was to ensure strict compliance with the regulatory provisions governing the temporary occupation of public and maritime domains. To no avail. After their inspection, nothing will change. The bad practices have resumed with a vengeance.
The issue is then brought to Parliament. Lawmakers mention the dysfunctions related to "non-compliance with the specifications relating to this seasonal activity, particularly in terms of the number of parasols rented out on the premises or the area exploited." Towards a beginning of a solution?
