Morocco Cracks Down on Unruly Beach Umbrella Rentals After Tourist Complaints

Faced with the rising anger of vacationers who denounce the anarchy on certain Moroccan beaches due to beach umbrella renters, deputies have questioned local authorities on the conditions for granting permits to these umbrella renters.
Every summer, tourists complain about the umbrella renters who invade the most crowded beaches in Morocco. This year, the situation seems more glaring, to the point where parliament has questioned local authorities on the subject, calling on them to strengthen control over the issuance of permits, reports the daily Akhbar.
The authorities of Tetouan and M’diq, whose beaches are subject to the diktat of these umbrella renters, have given firm instructions to strengthen control this week on the rental of umbrellas on the beaches. Specialized commissions will be dispatched to all the beaches and seizures of equipment from offenders are expected. Sanctions that could lead to the withdrawal of permits are also planned against these renters who do not respect the specifications.
For its part, the Ministry of the Interior insists on the need for municipalities to ensure the strict application of the texts governing the temporary occupation of public and maritime domains, which involves the implementation of mechanisms and means to ensure the control of the exploitation of the permits granted. The objective, it is assured, is not to suppress the activity of renting umbrellas, which creates seasonal jobs for young people and contributes to local development.
