Barcelona: pork banned from menus in all public daycare centers
The Barcelona city government has banned pork and pork derivatives from the menus of public daycare centers for cultural and religious reasons. This measure, aimed at inclusivity, has sparked a fierce political controversy led by right-wing parties.
The Municipal Institute of Education justifies this decision by the desire to offer a "more inclusive and adapted to the diverse realities" of children aged 0 to 3 years. This policy is based on an official instruction framing dietary diversity within the city’s public canteens.

The Popular Party (PP) denounces an "attack on the meat sector", a strategic industry worth 3.6 billion euros in Catalonia. Daniel Sirera, the local PP leader, accuses the city hall of favoring "ideological pressure" to the detriment of the productive economy and gastronomic traditions.
For its part, the far-right party Vox denounces an "imposition" and a cultural "capitulation". "Our tradition is what it is and we must protect it at all costs," said Gonzalo de Oro, the party’s spokesman in the city hall, denouncing a forced adaptation to minority religious customs.
