He Was a Banker in Morocco, Left for Italy for Love… and Became a Welder

On Sunday, September 20, Jawad was riding his motorcycle toward Verona when he spotted a wallet in the middle of the road. He stopped, looked for an address among the papers and went to the owner’s home. The owner was absent. With the help of a neighbor, the two men eventually got in touch and arranged an appointment to retrieve the item.

The owner, Matteo Scolari, director of Verona Network, recounted the meeting on social media. His account received more than 50,000 views. He offered Jawad a reward, which he refused: “I simply did my duty,” the latter explained to the Corriere del Veneto on September 23.

Jawad attributes this instinct to the upbringing he received from his father. He says he had already returned items he had found in the past. This time, the owner’s reaction led him to tell his own story.

“In Morocco, I was doing very well”

Originally from Khouribga, Jawad held the position of cashier manager at a bank. He had his job and his life in Morocco when he met Rajaa Gharib. She had come to spend a holiday in the country and had gone to the bank where he worked. They began talking, and their relationship developed.

Jawad would have preferred them to live in Morocco. Rajaa, who grew up and studied in the Italian province of Verona, found it difficult to imagine starting her life over there. The couple married in Morocco in 2017. Two years later, Jawad joined her in Italy.

There, he had to change professions. He first learned Italian, then worked for a company that painted metal parts. Since 2021, he has been employed as a welder at a company in Verona, where he is also learning to program welding robots.
