Baleària Sees 30% Surge in Morocco-Spain Freight Traffic as Morocco Emerges as ’Europe’s New Factory’

The maritime transport company Baleària recorded a 30% growth in freight traffic in the first quarter of 2023 on its connection lines with Morocco. It thus transported a total of 570,000 linear meters of goods on the Almería-Nador, Algeciras-Tangier and the Motril-Tangier line, launched in November 2022. The most transported products are textiles, automotive and food (fresh vegetables).
The port of Motril in Andalusia is emerging as a solid alternative to the road between Algeciras and Tangier, due to its faster port processing and its shorter road connection distance with northern Spain and the rest of Europe. This new connection allows Baleària to expand its freight transport offer in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, reports Economiadigital.es.
For the company’s managers, Morocco has become a new factory in Europe, particularly in the textile, automotive and fresh vegetable sectors. A powerful industrial zone has been deployed near the port of Tangier, where Inditex in particular stands out. In 2022, 49% of the factories manufacturing clothes for the group were located in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Morocco or Turkey. The automotive industry is also growing in this region, with major projects from Stellantis, Renault and suppliers such as Lear.
Baleària is thus strengthening its passenger and freight transport services with North Africa, a region experiencing strong economic growth, and is adapting to the needs of its customers by guaranteeing high reliability and competitiveness with adapted schedules and frequencies, it is specified.
