A Baby Born in Mid-Flight Over the Moroccan Sahara
During a flight between Dakar and Rome, a passenger seven months pregnant gave birth to a boy. This unexpected event forced the crew to make an emergency turnaround above the desert.
During the night of April 29-30, the Airbus A321neo LR of ITA Airways left the Senegalese airport to reach Italy. On board this aircraft, 155 passengers and seven crew members took their seats under the supervision of Captain Alessandro Vannucci and his co-pilot Filip Stojmenov.

At 2:47 a.m., approximately one hour after departure, the cabin chief informs the cockpit of an urgent medical problem. "No one had been informed of the pregnancy," the captain would later tell Corriere della Sera. Only three minutes after this first alert, the passenger’s water breaks.
The aircraft was then flying over the Moroccan Sahara and Mauritania, far from major European airports equipped to receive a premature baby. Following protocols, the flight crew laid the pregnant woman down. An Italian doctor and a French nurse, present among the passengers, immediately came to lend their expertise to supervise the labor.
Faced with geographic isolation and medical risks, the cockpit consulted with the operations center in Rome via satellite link. The decision was made to abandon the initial route and return to Dakar, the nearest major infrastructure. The pilots demanded the presence of Senegalese rescue services on the tarmac "within the hour."
The little boy came into the world in mid-air, precisely at the moment the aircraft began its turnaround. Placed in an isolated space by the crew to ensure his mother’s privacy, the newborn was named Mohammed Alessandro, a double tribute to his origins and the captain. The news quickly triggered applause throughout the cabin.

This exceptional birth, which statistically occurs only once in 23 million passengers, marks a first for the Italian airline. The company officially confirmed the newborn’s perfect health while praising the emergency management and professionalism of its flight crew.
