Baby Born During Migrant Rescue Off Canary Islands Coast

The emergency services of the Canary Islands archipelago announced the birth of a baby during the rescue operation of 35 migrants located in the Atlantic Ocean off the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. This is the second largest island of the Canaries, located about a hundred kilometers off the coast of Morocco.

"The sea rescue service transferred to Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) the 35 occupants of a boat located 37 nautical miles from Fuerteventura" on Tuesday, the Canary Islands emergency services wrote on their Twitter account.

Health personnel and the Red Cross rushed to the aid of these people, including "a baby born during the transfer to the quay," it is specified. The newborn, as well as his mother and another woman, were transferred to a hospital to receive the necessary care, reports Belga.

Since the beginning of the year until April 15, Spain has recorded a decrease of nearly 20% in migrants arriving on its territory by land or sea, compared to the same period in 2019, going from 7,516 last year to 6,028 this year.

In contrast, the arrival of migrants by sea to the Canaries has seen a sharp increase, with 1,781 since the beginning of the year, compared to 181 over the same period a year earlier. As for the number of boats leaving Africa and arriving in the Canaries, it has increased from 20 to 61 compared to the same period in 2019, tripling.
