Ashura Celebrations in Morocco Turn Chaotic as Fireworks Spark Urban Unrest

A scene filmed on Monday evening in Salé has gone viral on social media. The celebration of the Ashura festival led to disturbing scenes of firecracker explosions.
Scenes worthy of a bomb attack, taking place in neighborhoods of Salé, have shocked many. Indeed, on the eve of Ashura, young children amused themselves by playing with firecrackers. The video showing the terrible detonations of these objects has been widely shared and has inflamed social networks, reports H24Info.
According to the media, "it looks like a war between two gangs". It added that apart from Salé, almost all the cities of the Kingdom turn into battlefields on the occasion of this festival celebrated in a festive way in Morocco, unlike other Muslim countries, where it coincides with a day of mourning and contemplation.
However, contrary to the very spirit of this festival, these young people play with death by using firecrackers and fireworks, it observes. Yet these firecrackers expose to great dangers. This was the case last year of a child from the Derb Ghellaf neighborhood who died after receiving a smoke bomb in the neck, the same source recalls.
Despite all the awareness-raising about the serious nuisances resulting from the use of pyrotechnic products, the population, especially the young, continues to defy the competent authorities, while exposing themselves to the risks resulting from the explosion of firecrackers.
