Arab League Urges Restraint as Algeria Severs Diplomatic Ties with Morocco

The Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, reacted to Algeria’s decision to break diplomatic relations with Morocco. He calls on the two countries to show restraint and avoid any further escalation.
In a statement from the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit says he hopes that Morocco and Algeria would restore minimal relations in order to preserve their own interests, their stability and the stability of the region. He also stressed that they are the two leading countries within the Arab common action mechanism. He also deplored the current situation.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, announced that Algeria has decided to break its diplomatic relations with Morocco. Algiers accuses Rabat in particular of the support of Omar Hilale, Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations, for the "valiant Kabyle people", the statements of the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs during his historic visit to Rabat, past incidents, such as the desecration of the Algerian flag at the Casablanca consulate in 2013.
