Arab Cup: No Maghreb derby, Morocco will face the Emirates after Algeria’s fall
The dream matchup of a 100% Maghreb semi-final will not take place. The Atlas Lions will have to overcome the United Arab Emirates to hope to reach the final, after the surprise elimination of Algeria on Friday evening. The dramatic penalty shootout scenario got the better of the Fennecs, propelling a resilient Emirati team on the path of Tarik Sektioui’s men.
The verdict came after suspense. While observers were anticipating an electric duel between neighbors, it was the lottery of penalties that sealed the fate of the quarter-final. Algeria, however, cited among the favorites, gave in to the composure of the Emiratis, who validated their ticket for the last four at the end of a breathtaking match. This outcome reshuffles the cards for the rest of the competition, offering Morocco an opponent with a different profile but galvanized by his exploit.
For the Moroccan staff, this new configuration does not solve the internal equations. If the opponent is now identified, the ills of the selection remain acute. Tarik Sektioui is preparing this shock with a depleted squad: full-back Mohamed Moufid will be missing due to suspension, while uncertainty still hangs over the health of striker Tarik Tissoudali, victim of a head injury in the previous round.
The Atlas Lions had ensured the essentials on Thursday by eliminating Syria (1-0) thanks to a goal from Walid Azaro. A qualification acquired with difficulty which contrasts with the heroic journey of their future opponent. The duel promises to be tactical between a Moroccan team favorite but weakened, and Emiratis full of confidence after having brought down one of the heavyweights of the tournament.
