Angelina Jolie Auctions Rare Churchill Wartime Painting of Marrakech Mosque

"Mosque of Marrakesh", that’s the name of this other painting by Winston Churchill, auctioned by Christie’s in London. Given to American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, this painting bought back by the famous American actress Angelina Jolie, reveals the image of the mosque in the 12th century, with in the background a sunset and the Atlas mountains.
This painting is the only work produced by the former British Prime Minister during World War II, reports Associated Press. It was painted the day after the Casablanca conference in January 1943, where Sir Winston Churchill had planned with Roosevelt the defeat of Nazi Germany. The same source specifies that the two leaders then went to Marrakech after the conference so that Roosevelt could discover the beauty of the city.
Two years later, this painting was sold by Roosevelt’s son after the American president’s death in 1945 before Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt bought it in 2011. Angelina Jolie is putting it up for sale at an estimated price between $2.1 million and $3.4 million.
According to Nick Orchard, head of the British modern art department at Christie’s, the auction house would like to set a new record for a new work by Churchill. In addition to this painting "Mosque of Marrakesh", the man also has other works including "The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell" sold for £1.8 million at Sotheby’s in 2014 and "Scene at Marrakech".
