US and Europe Monitor Moroccan Travelers for Suspected Jihadists

The annual passage of millions of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) through the Strait of Gibraltar worries Western countries, Spain at the forefront, but also the United States. The concern would come from the fact that for this year alone at least 72 suspected jihadists have been spotted during the crossing between Morocco and Spain. But, for lack of irrefutable evidence, these 72 people have not been arrested.

The newspaper Akhbar Al Yaoum explains that a report from the European Commission, devoted to the "Minerva" operation, deployed by the European Border Control Agency, "Frontex", speaks of at least 46 alerts given between July 12 and September 16 last. These alerts concern people suspected of having fought in the ranks of the terrorist organization, Daesh, on the Syrian front.

Another security operation, "Neptune II", deployed between July 2 and 8 last, and in which the Moroccan security services participated alongside several other security services, also made it possible to spot 12 suspected terrorists, including 9 who were about to enter Spanish territory.

The newspaper, quoted by the360, also talks about the interception of 220 candidates for illegal immigration from Morocco, the recovery of 12 stolen luxury cars and the seizure of 1.6 tons of cannabis and various types of weapons. After the downfall of Daesh, its fighters have been scattered all over the world.

And the purpose of this type of alert is precisely to track them down and follow their movements. From there, notes the daily, once spotted, the security services simply note the nature of the identity documents and travel documents they have presented.

They are not arrested, because no arrest warrant has been issued against them. They are simply on the list of suspects.
