Ancient Moroccan City of Lixus to Open for Public Tours on April 20

The opening of the archaeological site of Lixus at the mouth of the Oued Loukkos, near Larache, is just a matter of days. Indeed, on the occasion of the celebration of Heritage Month, the Ministry of Culture and Communication announced the date of April 20 to make this historic site accessible to the public.

The work to renovate the infrastructure likely to facilitate access to the archaeological site of Lixus has been completed. This is the result of the press release made public by the Ministry of Culture. An important step according to Minister Mohamed Laaraj, in the completion of an integrated project that focuses on the implementation of a program on archaeological excavations and the creation of a center to better publicize the remains of the site.

This project was also able to be completed thanks to a partnership program with the Italian Embassy in Rabat, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the Italian University of Siena. It is thanks in particular to these supports, estimated at 1.8 million dirhams, that the site has benefited from the equipment of the archaeological finds deposits, a conference room and a reception area, in addition to the development.

Cataloged as one of the most famous historical sites, Lixus is an ancient city founded by the Canaanites in the 12th century BC. This city would be one of the first cities in the western Mediterranean.
