American Tourist Hit with Steep ATM Fees in Morocco, Sparks Travel Warning

An American on vacation in Morocco was taken aback when she saw the receipt after withdrawing cash from an ATM at the airport.
On her Facebook page, she recounts having withdrawn 5,000 DH (about $500) from an ATM, but that her account was debited $548. The fees would amount to $70. The receipt indicates that she had to pay a 4.5% conversion surcharge. "What happened? And how can I avoid this happening again?" wonders the young woman who currently lives in Sweden.
The American’s post has generated comments. "The only time I’ve heard of fees like that was at the exchange office - it’s outrageous for a simple withdrawal," wrote one woman. "That’s why I don’t withdraw money at airports. They always charge an arm and a leg," added another. "It happened to me in Italy, ATMs can charge whatever they want. It’s completely crazy," complained an Internet user.
