Ambitious Tree-Planting Project Spans Mediterranean Coast from Spain to Algeria

Experts from Malaga, in southern Spain, have implemented a tree planting project that "belts" the Andalusian Mediterranean coast and extends from northern Morocco to Algeria.

Called the "Alboranian Green Belt", the project involved planting trees not only in the capital of Malaga, but also beyond the borders of Spain, particularly in northern Morocco and Algeria, bordering the Alboran Sea. This project is expected to impact a total of 12 million people and cover 30 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, reports Malaga Hoy.

The group of experts in charge of the project is led by Enrique Salvo Tierra, the director of the UNÍA nature conservation chair and professor of botany. According to him, the program is a green belt that covers protected forest areas such as nature parks or national parks, forest areas considered utility areas by the European Union and the forest masses bordering all cities.

This reforestation would bring three fundamental benefits. The first, a reduction in heat and humidity, leading to a more temperate climate. The second would be to reduce excessive runoff of waterways. The third would be to create an ecosystem service, which implies for example the reduction of dust...

The Alboranian Green Belt will be included in the green infrastructure plan, created by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, hoping that "in the face of the climate emergency, 2030 should be the year to reach an acceptable degree of development of a green belt of these characteristics". According to WHO recommendations, there should be a minimum of eight trees per person.
