Almería to Honor Slain Moroccan Woman with Monument Amid Political Debate

The Almería city council announced on Friday that it would erect a monument in memory of Zouhr, the 27-year-old Moroccan woman stabbed to death on August 7 by her husband. An initiative that did not receive unanimous support within the municipal council.
The announcement was made by the Councilor for Family, Inclusion and Equality, Paola Laynez, during a debate in the Almería council session on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, celebrated on November 25. But the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) prevented the debate on this subject, an act deplored by Laynez, who reproached the socialists for having used "such a sensitive and delicate subject" for "political" purposes.
"The reality is that when you have the opportunity to act and show your commitment, a firm commitment against gender-based violence, with real facts, you do absolutely nothing," reacted Adriana Valverde, the PSOE spokeswoman at the Almería town hall, raising the absence of an equality plan or a plan against harassment and calling for greater "firmness" in the face of sexist violence.
