Algerian Singer Sparks Controversy with Flag Display at Spanish Concert

During a showcase organized in the city of Bilbao, in northern Spain, Soolking brandished the Moroccan, Algerian and "Polisario" flags. This gesture, far from being appreciated by the Moroccan public, provoked strong reactions on the web.
Performing a song titled "Liberté", the Algerian singer wanted to highlight the fraternal spirit of the Moroccan and Algerian peoples by displaying the two respective flags. However, he brought out the flag of the "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic" (SADR), believing, he said, that it was the flag of Palestine.
This "mistake" sparked controversy among Moroccan Internet users. They interpreted the gesture as an attack on the territorial integrity of the Kingdom. Soolking immediately apologized, assuring that his gesture was unintentional.
"Last night’s evening was organized by a Moroccan, and there was an audience made up of Moroccans and Algerians. They gave me a Moroccan flag, I waved it. Then I held the Algerian one, as well as the other one. I thought I was carrying the Palestinian flag," he said, before adding: "We are Muslims, Maghrebians, we don’t do politics. I don’t know much about it."
