Algerian Singer Cheb Khaled Sparks Controversy with Moroccan Flag in Beirut Tribute Video
The appearance of the Moroccan flag in the music video of the new tribute single entitled "Ismouha Beyrouth" ("She’s Called Beirut") by the famous Algerian singer Cheb Khaled is not to the taste of Algerians. Criticism is pouring in from all sides.
The announcement of the release of this music video in solidarity and support of the Lebanese people following the deadly double explosion that occurred on August 4 in Beirut has sparked heated controversy. In this video, we see Cheb Khaled singing with flags of Algeria, Lebanon and Morocco hanging in the background. An image criticized by many Algerians who do not tolerate the Moroccan flag appearing in the music video of an Algerian singer.
Messages and comments are pouring in on the web. The "king of raï" did not wait long to react. "They shame us, we must all be united on this land that is doing very badly right now. They focus on the belonging of a country that they dishonor," reacted the singer, adding that he is "first and foremost a citizen of the world".
