Algeria Tightens Rules for Deported Nationals Amid Diplomatic Tensions with France

Algeria still cannot digest France’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty. It is using its nationals in an irregular situation under OQTF (Obligation to Leave French Territory) as a means of pressure on Paris, but it could be caught in its own trap.
Algeria is punishing France because of the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. Its airline Air Algérie "now requires a consular laissez-passer for the boarding of Algerians in an irregular situation under OQTF, even when they have a valid identity document," reports the website of Journal du Dimanche (JDD). During the execution of the removal by air of Algerian nationals from a French airport, "Air Algérie now requires consular laissez-passer" (LPC), even when these individuals hold valid identity documents, while the current Franco-Algerian agreements stipulate that the simple presentation of a valid identity document is sufficient for expulsion.
"This additional and new requirement derogates from the Franco-Algerian agreements, the valid identity document alone allowing the realization of removals," indicates an internal note sent to the national police by the office of the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau. The note specifies: in case of refusal of boarding of an Algerian expelled, an attestation will have to be "systematically" requested by the law enforcement from the Air Algérie station manager. And "in case of refusal to issue a written document, the identity of the station manager will have to be recorded," adds the note.
France could react to the Algerian requirement by withdrawing flight slots from Air Algérie or even banning it from French airspace! Algiers could apply reciprocity by banning its airspace to Air France and Transavia. But Algeria will turn against its diaspora. Without air links, it would no longer be able to return to the country. Algerians would no longer be able to come to France for medical treatment. How far would the standoff between France and Algeria go?
