Algeria’s State TV Boycotts Morocco’s Matches in Africa Cup of Nations

Tensions between Morocco and Algeria have shifted to the sports field with the decision of the Algerian public television to boycott the matches of the Atlas Lions participating in the 34th edition of the CAN in Côte d’Ivoire.
While it has obtained the broadcasting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2024), the first Algerian channel refuses to broadcast any match played by the Moroccan national team during the first round. It prefers instead to broadcast all the matches of Morocco’s opponents in its group (F). The Algerian channel will therefore ensure the broadcast of the match between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, instead of the match between Morocco and Tanzania scheduled for Wednesday, January 17. It intends to also broadcast the matches of the teams of Egypt and Mauritania in the same tournament, with the exception of Morocco and Tunisia.
If Morocco manages to get out of the group stage, the Algerian channel will not broadcast its next matches. This will also be the case if the Atlas Lions reach the quarter-finals, qualify for the semi-finals or finish in third place or even reach the final. The broadcast of the matches "will be determined later," announced the Algerian channel. It could therefore decide to boycott them simply because of Morocco.
Ranked in Group F, the Atlas Lions will take the field on Wednesday, January 17. They will challenge Tanzania at the Laurent Pokou stadium in San Pedro, before playing a new match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, January 21, still at the same stadium and finally Zambia, the 2012 winner, on Wednesday, January 24. Morocco - a semi-finalist in the last World Cup - is among the favorites of the CAN Côte d’Ivoire 2024.
