Algeria Aims to Rival Morocco in Green Hydrogen Race for European Market

Algeria aspires to become a major producer of green hydrogen and an important supplier to Europe, but it faces Morocco, a formidable competitor. The kingdom has a head start.
"Algeria is the latest country to embark on the race for hydrogen, with a national roadmap that will allow the North African state to produce blue and green hydrogen for export to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, but it will have to fight against Morocco in terms of commercial proximity and reduced transport costs," analyzes Rethink. Hydrogen will therefore be the new field of competition between the two neighboring countries.
Europe’s ambition is to produce 10 MMTA (million metric tons per year) of hydrogen and import an additional 10 MMTA by 2030, the site points out, stressing that its relative proximity makes Morocco, Egypt and now Algeria preferred destinations for the production of green hydrogen, as the cost of transport can represent more than 60% of the final cost, depending on the location.
