Algeciras Urges Spain to Restart Ferry Links with Morocco for Summer Transit

The municipal council of Algeciras, in its session on Friday, called on the central government to intensify negotiations with Morocco for the resumption of maritime links suspended since March 2020 and the organization this year of the Marhaba Operation.
It was the Ciudadanos (center-right) group that raised the issue during this session, recalling that the usual date for the Marhaba Operation is approaching. This Transit operation allows around three million Moroccans living mainly in Europe to cross the strait via the port of Algeciras to go to Morocco during the summer holidays, recalls Europa Sur.

The cancellation by Morocco of the Marhaba Operation in 2020 and 2021 has severely impacted the traffic of the port of Algeciras, which has recorded a cumulative loss of 9.3 million passengers and 2 million tourist vehicles. During these two years, the MREs who wanted to spend their summer holidays in Morocco were invited to go through the ports of Sète in France and Genoa in Italy, lamented Ciudadanos.
