Algeciras Travel Agencies Protest Shipping Companies’ Plan to End Ticket Sales

The employees of the 13 travel agencies located at the maritime station of the port of Algeciras plan to demonstrate this Friday to demand that the shipping companies allow them to continue selling tickets for at least one year.
These workers, estimated at around a hundred, disapprove of the decision of almost all the shipping companies operating in the strait to take care of the sale of tickets themselves. They plan to demonstrate this Friday to express their discontent and demand that the shipping companies allow them to continue selling tickets for at least one year, reports Europa Sur.

The call to demonstrate was launched by the Association of Travel Agencies of the Port of Algeciras, which was supported by the CCOO Citizens’ Services Federation. It follows the refusal of the shipping companies to take into account the demands of these workers whose jobs are threatened by their decision. The gathering is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The travel agencies ceased their activities in March 2020 after Morocco decided to close its borders for health reasons. Passenger maritime traffic was restored on April 12, much to the delight of the employees of these agencies. But they were surprised by the decision of the shipping companies to no longer provide them with the codes that allowed them to sell the tickets.
"An unprecedented situation," according to CCOO, which warns that if nothing is done to reverse the situation, the agencies would be forced to lay off their employees and close shop.
