Algeciras Port Traffic Plummets 90% as Moroccan Diaspora Travel Halts

The absence of port traffic in Algeciras, mainly due to the non-activation of the Marhaba operation dedicated to Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), has caused activity to drop by nearly 90%.
This sharp decline concerns the links between the ports of Algeciras and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in July, usually very busy with MREs during the months of July and August.
In detail, the figures revealed by the Algeciras port authority show that Ceuta welcomed some 115,000 people in July, compared to 900,000 people a year earlier, a drop of 88%. The vast majority of these passengers were repatriated from Morocco, as part of the agreements between the two countries.
However, freight traffic has withstood the Covid-19 crisis. Between January and July last year, some 217,565 trucks transited through the ports, down 3.9% compared to the previous year, but with a 35% drop between Algeciras and Ceuta and almost stable between Tanger-Med and Algeciras (-0.1% only).
