Algeciras Port Faces Economic Blow as Morocco Cancels Key Transit Operation

The municipal council of Algeciras (Cadiz), led by José Ignacio Landaluce (PP), denounced on Saturday the "disinterest" of the central government (PSOE and Podemos) for the city and recalled the important role of the port of the city as an essential link in the transport of goods at the European and global level.
In a press release, the municipality of Algeciras returned to Morocco’s decision to cancel the Marhaba Operation, effectively excluding Spanish ports, including that of Algeciras, and the diversion of significant quantities of fruits and vegetables to other national ports and the rest of the European Union.
For the municipality, these aspects "call into question the role of the port of Algeciras as an essential link in the transport of goods at the European and global level, as well as the future of thousands of families working in the port".
The mayor then explained what he means by "disinterest" of the Executive for the city and the Gibraltar camp. "It hurts me as the first municipal authority and as an Algecireño, that the central government does not help us enough, ignores us and does not support us to overcome this crisis," said the mayor who invites Pedro Sanchez to show more "responsibility, commitment and height towards Algeciras". Landaluce called on the central government to "set aside political colors and think about the future of the city which needs more attention and affection than ever".
