Algeciras Port Expands Capacity to Compete with Tanger Med, Invests €5 Million in New Ro-Ro Terminal

The port of Algeciras, a competitor of Tanger Med, will commission a new ro-ro terminal in early 2021.
With the commissioning of the future ro-ro terminal, the port of Algeciras will be able to double its current handling capacity of TIR trucks and rolling cargo. This capacity will reach 500,000 units per year as of 2021, L’Économiste reports. The port has invested 5 million euros (around 55 million DH) in the construction of this terminal. However, this capacity is far from allowing it to overcome the competition. Especially since the capacity of the Tanger Med port exceeds 700,000 trucks per year.
In 2019, the TIR traffic was around 357,000 units in Tanger Med, of which a little more than 90% with Algeciras. In this Covid-19 context, the total volume would have reached 200,000 during the first seven months of 2020. The Moroccan port could reach or even exceed its 2019 performance.
There are daily connections between the two ports and a significant flow of goods in constant progression. The restart of the chains of the two car manufacturers, Renault and PSA, and the increase in exports of agri-food products have also contributed to the development of trade.
