Agadir Court Sentences Man to 25 Years for Fatal Stabbing of Police Officer

The two young people prosecuted since last May for assault and battery resulting in the death of a police officer in the performance of his duties are now aware of their fate. The main defendant was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the criminal chamber of the court of first instance near the Agadir Court of Appeal. The second was acquitted.
The facts date back to last May. The police officer intervened to put an end to a violent dispute between two young people in Inezgane. But he received from the main defendant in this case a knife blow that would prove fatal to him. The two suspects fled before the police services came to the scene to make the initial findings. The research and investigations, as well as the testimonies of some residents, made it possible to arrest the two suspects, reports the daily Al Akhbar.
They were presented to the Attorney General of the King near the Agadir Court of Appeal, who prosecuted them for voluntary homicide. They were then referred to the investigating judge who ordered their placement in pre-trial detention. After the investigation, the indictment was reclassified as involuntary homicide against the main defendant. This justifies the 25-year prison sentence and the payment of a fine of 400,000 dirhams.
It should be noted that the deceased police officer was posthumously promoted to the rank of senior police officer in recognition of "his high sense of professionalism and his immense sacrifice. The deceased showed selflessness when he intervened to put an end to a violent dispute with a knife between two individuals who threatened the safety of persons and property," a statement from the DGSN had said.
