Agadir Combats Water Scarcity: Recycled Wastewater Irrigates Parks and Golf Courses

To solve the problem of scarce water resources, the Autonomous Multi-Services Authority of Agadir (RAMSA) has made investments to reuse wastewater for the irrigation of green spaces and golf courses in the Souss-Massa region.

In its latest issue, La Vie Éco deciphers the reuse of wastewater for the irrigation of green spaces and golf courses in the Souss-Massa region, noting that the issue of water scarcity is a recurring phenomenon throughout the region.

The water resources assessment has expressed a yearly deficit for years, it specifies, adding that the region has a water table that is subject to continuous depletion, resulting in a widespread drop in piezometric levels, particularly due to the overexploitation of resources for irrigation and watering. This has led to the use of unconventional water.

According to the weekly, RAMSA has made significant investments in the treatment of wastewater in Greater Agadir through the tertiary treatment plant located in the town of Mzar and commissioned in 2010.

Through these projects, the authority aims to ensure an annual potential of 12 million m³ of treated water, the sanitary quality of which corresponds to category A in accordance with the standards for irrigation of green spaces, indicates a note from the management, adding that the initiative aims to substitute part of the drinking water consumption of Greater Agadir used in the watering of green spaces.

It also aims to generate significant economic savings in terms of fertilizing nutrients.

As for the financing, the publication reports that an envelope of 150 million dirhams has been allocated to the project of reusing treated wastewater for the watering of green spaces and golf courses in Greater Agadir.
