African Handball Championship Rescheduled After Algeria’s Venue Protest

Initially scheduled from January 13 to 23, 2022 in Guelmim and Laâyoune, the 25th African Nations Cup for senior men will start next June. After accepting the appeal of Algeria, which boycotted this major sporting event because of the chosen venue (Sahara), the African Handball Confederation (CAHB) ordered the resumption of the draw.
After a first postponement on December 9, the 25th African Nations Cup for senior men is rescheduled for the period from June 22 to July 2, 2022, announces the African Handball Confederation (CAHB) in a press release published on its website. The body had justified its first postponement by the need to study the appeals filed by the Zambian and Algerian selections.
Algeria had boycotted the competition because it is planned that it will be organized in part in Laâyoune, a city in the Sahara. A choice that is not to the liking of the eastern neighbor, protected by the separatist movement, the Polisario. The CAHB has therefore accepted the appeals of Zambia and Algeria, the examination of which is underway. It has also ordered the resumption of the draw for the competition, as "other countries have expressed the wish to take part in the 25th African Nations Cup".
