African Development Bank Invests $3 Billion in Morocco, Largest Portfolio in Africa

Morocco is recognized as the first client of the African Development Bank (AfDB). This is due to the active portfolio of the banking institution in the Kingdom, which totaled 35 operations for an envelope of about $3 billion in commitments as of the end of September.
These commitments are divided into the energy (31.5%), transport (19.8%), water and sanitation (15.5%), multisectoral and social development operations (12.7%), private (11.2%) and agriculture (9.4%) sectors.
These data are recorded in the latest Synthesis Review of the Bank’s Results, unveiled on Thursday, September 26 in Rabat.
The performance of the Bank’s portfolio in Morocco is "very satisfactory" on a scale of 1 to 4, and would have evolved from 2.6 in 2009 to 3.7 in 2018, in the absence of risky projects, said Rudolphe Petras, Principal Results Specialist at the AfDB, during the presentation of the Review.
According to the details received by the site, the disbursement rate, for its part, evolved from 36% in 2009 to 64% in 2018, while the amount of annual approvals increased, from 607 million euros in 2009 to 733 million euros in 2018.
16 million people have had better access to transport infrastructure and 6.9 million of them have benefited from a new electricity connection.
Hespress reports that the Review highlighted the notable progress made by Morocco in the areas of governance, improvement of the business climate and gender equality, in addition to the Kingdom’s leadership position in Africa in terms of renewable energy and the fight against climate change.
Also, a satisfaction was addressed to the Kingdom for having deployed a state-of-the-art transport infrastructure network. This has supported its industrialization dynamics and boosted its attractiveness for foreign direct investment.
